1. Avoid hitting the snooze button.
You set your alarm for a reason – to wake up early. If you keep hitting the snooze button on your alarm after it sets off, you’re bound to hit it a second time, a third, and so on. Before you know it, you’ve hit it several times. The snooze button is a snare; try to inculcate that in your mind. The last thing you want is to fall into that trap. Once your alarm sets off, will yourself to get up and get out of your bed or risk falling into a snare. Rather than hit the snooze button, give yourself time to be fully awake, prepare yourself – mentally, physically, and emotionally – and spend a few minutes by yourself instead.
2. Avoid checking social media.
Checking social media posts email early in the morning will take away precious time you should have devoted to getting yourself mentally and physically ready to start the day. Let’s face it; not everything on social media is worth spending time on. It’s a distraction you can do well without. Social media is counterproductive. Instead of gearing you up for the day ahead, the things your read on social media, majority of which are, let’s be honest here, garbage, will derail and distract you the rest of the day.
3. Avoid reading email.
You probably think sifting through your inbox first thing in the morning is the best way to make yourself productive. After all, majority of the items in there are work-related. Nevertheless, the items in your inbox can cloud your judgment of what you should prioritize for the day. Instead of letting the contents of your inbox dictate which task should be prioritized, think about what’s on your plate for the day. Prioritize your thoughts based on what’s important and not based on what your inbox leads you to believe is important.
4. Exercise or meditate.
Studies prove that there are cognitive benefits to exercising in the morning. Apparently, exercise doesn’t only increase your energy levels and improve your blood circulation but it also develops your memory and thinking abilities. Thus, you will be in a better position to make wise decisions during the day. At the same time, meditation will not only help you relax and de-stress but it can also help clear your mind so you can focus on more important things.
5. Take a cold shower.
The shower is, perhaps, the best place to do some serious planning. You can map out the entire day while scrubbing the sleep off your body. Besides, taking cold showers in the morning has been proven to be an awesome productivity hack. It appears that a cold shower can trigger the release of the hormone norepinephrine, which is known to be energy, concentration, and alertness booster once released into the brain.
6. Eat a nutritious breakfast.
You’ve probably heard it a million times before, but it’s a fact you can never refute – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A nutritious breakfast is a great way to kick-start your day, giving you that boost to your metabolism you need early in the day. It also gives you the energy to take on whatever challenges the day has in store for you.
7. Review your goals and priorities.
It never hurts to brainstorm with yourself. You can write down at least the top five actions you plan on taking on for the day. Listening to a podcast or audiobook focused on business is a great way to learn new skills or maybe hone the skills you already have. These are skills connected to self-improvement, time management, productivity, and business management. You’ll never know when an idea stares you in your face, but by listening to industry leaders speak about their experiences, you can gain real-life takeaways, as well as new information you can use to help your business grow.
